Vanguard is a unique type of rail fastening. It provides a very low stiffness through rubber wedges which support the web of the rail and prevent excessive rail roll (dynamic gauge widening) which would normally occur on conventional baseplated systems. The nature of the rubber wedge support and the robust design of the assembly provides an ultra low maintenance system with a very long life expectancy in track.
Vanguard has a natural frequency of approximately 20-25 Hz which provides the highest level of vibration attenuation that can be achieved in a surface mounted resilient rail support system. Pandrol Vanguard can be installed on all types of construction methods. It can be provided for areas of a new build project where a high level of vibration attenuation has been identified as a requirement. Because of it’s low profile Pandrol Vanguard can give the opportunity to reduce tunnel diameters, and therefore reduce costs for new track construction. Additionally, its low weight can lead to considerable savings in the cost of structures such as viaducts, which would otherwise have to accommodate the greater weight of floating slab-track.
Many railway systems are built on the belief that the performance of the rail fastening system will be adequate for the environmental needs of the surrounding area. Unfortunately modeling the acoustic performance of a railway is not a precise science due to the unpredictable nature of the ground, wheel and rail conditions and whilst environmental impact studies mitigate some of the risk, invariably there can be areas along the line where some vibration/secondary noise can create a public nuisance. The very low profile of Pandrol Vanguard compared to other low stiffness track forms means it can be installed within existing restricted rail heights and can therefore be used to increase the vibration isolation properties of an existing track form. That is something that we are doing in many existing railway systems. In fact, at the end of 2014 approximately 50% of all Pandrol Vanguard supplies have been installed in existing operating railways.

Pandrol Vanguard is suitable for use on bridges to attenuate vibration which can otherwise lead to secondary noise from other parts of the bridge structure which may resonate. As Vanguard is an indirect baseplated system it can be applied directly to bridge girders or to the surface of timber, concrete or FFU bridge bearers and also on timber or concrete sleepers on ballasted bridge decks.
Pandrol Vanguard is suitable for use on Main Line (Passenger Freight) applications. It is suitable for installation on the surface of timber or concrete sleepers in ballasted track and also on all types of non ballasted track form.
Pandrol Vanguard is compliant with the requirements of the European High Speed TSI (Technical Standards for interoperability), and a declaration of conformity has been issued for use on ‘connecting lines’ at speeds less than 160 km/h
